Nonjudgmentally

Notice without labelling experiences as good or bad.

Purpose

Helps reduce emotional intensity by separating facts from judgments.

How to use it

1 Notice the judgment Catch words like bad, stupid, lazy, pathetic, unfair, or should.
2 Replace judgment with facts Describe what happened without adding labels.
3 Acknowledge consequences You can still recognise that something is painful or harmful.
4 Return to what works Focus on the next effective action.

Example

Instead of saying, "I am lazy," say, "I have not started the task yet."

Rephrase one judgment

  • Write or think of one judgment.
  • Replace it with a factual description.

Tips

  • Nonjudgmental does not mean approving.
  • It means describing reality more accurately.

Common pitfalls

  • Judging yourself for judging
