GIVE

Keep the relationship in mind.

Purpose

Helps you maintain or improve a relationship while discussing something important.

Steps

1 Gentle Be respectful. Avoid attacks, threats, harsh judgment, or unnecessary sarcasm.
2 Interested Show that you are listening. Pay attention, do not interrupt, and ask questions when useful.
3 Validate Acknowledge the other person's feelings, perspective, or difficulty where possible.
4 Easy Manner Use a calm, approachable tone. Where appropriate, use warmth or lightness.

I can see this has been frustrating for you. I want to understand it properly. Can we talk through what happened?

Tips

  • GIVE does not mean agreeing with everything.
  • Validation can reduce defensiveness.
  • You can be gentle and still be firm.

  • Being so gentle that your own needs disappear.
  • Validating only when you agree.
